Laser cleaning vs sandblasting

Plain-English guidance on when laser cleaning is the better choice, and when blasting still makes sense.

A simple way to decide

Think of laser cleaning as “precision and control”, and sandblasting as “fast, broad removal”. Both are useful — the best choice depends on what you’re cleaning and the finish you need.

Laser cleaning is usually better when…

  • You want controlled removal (e.g. selective rust/paint without heavy abrasion)
  • Dust/waste needs to be minimal (shops, public spaces, sensitive environments)
  • You’re working on detailed parts (brackets, hinges, ornate metalwork)
  • The substrate matters (heritage stone/brick or thin metals)
  • You want a consistent surface-prep result for re-coating

Sandblasting can still be better when…

  • You have large areas and speed is the main driver
  • The substrate is robust and heavy abrasion isn’t an issue
  • You can fully control dust containment and cleanup
  • The site already has blasting facilities and extraction
  • Surface profile requirements are best achieved by blasting media
