Removing paint from steel
How to think about paint type, steel condition and finish quality — and when laser cleaning is a good fit.
First, identify the paint and the steel condition
- Is it thick industrial coating, thin household paint, or multiple layers?
- Is there rust underneath or pitting in the steel?
- Do you need a clean bare-metal finish for re-coating, or just “tidy up”?
- Is it a flat panel, textured steel, or detailed metalwork?
Where laser cleaning helps
- Removing paint without heavy abrasion (especially on detailed parts)
- Cleaning back to a paint-ready surface on brackets, frames, railings and gates
- Selective cleaning (e.g. around welds, edges, tight corners)
- Reducing dust compared with aggressive mechanical methods
When other methods may be better
- Very large flat areas where speed outweighs finish control
- If the site already has contained blasting facilities
- Where coating type requires a specific mechanical profile
